The bell has gone off!

Fight for a good year!
I woke up this morning, feeling like I was literally hearing the rave of the spectating capacity crowd to the fight of my life. The holidays are over, and I feel the anticipation of the coming referee’s whistle and the ring side bell, indicating the starting of another round of brutal and very combative year. I wish I could hold unto the holidays and make them last just a little longer, because I would like to laze a little longer but the referee called Mr Time is having none of that nonsense. I realised how the heavy weight boxing champions must feel in-between rounds, it must be a mind-numbing and very scary moment or it could actually be exhilarating, depending on how you look at it. Whichever it is, we would soon find out.  I hear the bell go off. Grabbing lungs full of air, I jump to my feet and dance to the centre of the ring where my opponent is already waiting, full of vigour and looking as intimidating as ever. I try to block the fear from my mind, and appear as confident as possible.

The ring where we battle is like every other. I’m in the blue corner, and my opponent, Field marshal Life, is in the red corner. Mr Time is our referee and the world and the generations to come are the capacity crowd. It’s a fight until one of us drops dead kind of fight. Every year is a round and the prize is a hope of a successful year. With the flood lights in my eyes and my body glittering with sweat, I dance my way to my opponent who pounces at me with a right hand jab; it’s a creditor from last year, yelling angrily in the phone, demanding his money. I deflect the blow by profusely apologising and making a promise to pay up before the month ends.  Just then I hear the voice of the ring side commentator cut through my mind like a sharp knife…

“Ladies and gentlemen, here we have it, another exhilarating and electrifying year is about to begin, so fasten your seat belts because this is going to be a rollercoaster ride. Our contenders once again emerging from the blue corner, is a lad, an upcoming wonder from what we have seen so far, a real gladiator called Kani. In the red corner is the timeworn champion executioner, the merciless punisher, the cruel crucifier, the nightmare of the living, the experience that makes grown men cry, he is none other than Field Marshal Life.”

I swear if he didn’t stop at that point, I might have wet myself, this guy is already intimidating enough as it is, but you know commentators; you cannot control what they say.  Anyway, I had more important things to think about, red shorts is already looming over me, but the commentators annoying voice still cut through my concentration.

“Ladies and gentlemen I can’t comfortably predict this match, the lad took quite a beating in the last round, although he ended the round still standing, it was a barely still standing. So I don’t know what will happen in this round. Field Marshal Life is not known to be merciful or to back down; I expect he’ll dish out all he’s got, let loose the fire. His aim is to maim and destroy, and he goes at it with blind focus. If the lad will survive this round, much less beat his towering opponent, he has to take another approach, he has to bring some joker to this game, he has to do something different than what he brought in the last game”

And it hit me; that’s it! Thank you Mr Commentator. That is what I need. I need to do something different, I need a joker, something I have not done before. I need to bring in some surprise to this battle, so what is it gonna be?

Now, that is my question for you too, what is going to be your game changer this year? Would you take a course online? Would you lose 20pounds? Would you join a voluntary club? What new thing would you attempt that would bring some difference to your game this year? What you did and the way you did it last year made only a little mark, but it did not bring down your towering opponent. So you must change tactics, you must add flavour, you must …

  • Try something different, something you have not done before.

  •  Attempt something related to, or that has the ability to bring you closer to your goals.

Think hard, what would that thing be? Answer that question friend and the year would start looking up. Life respects novelty; let’s give this year something new to deal with.
