So What About The New Year?

Guess what people, it’s the New Year! Its amazing how time flies, does it not?  I was reminiscing with some friends on how we considered 2014 a few years ago. It sounded like the end of times or something, as if it was so far away it would never come, but alas it is here.

I love the New Year, because it’s critical in the success journey of life, and I will very briefly give you a few ideas that will help you picture the New Year slightly differently, to enable you, together with the other great advices you are getting from wise experts, make the most of the New Year.

Is there anything special about the New Year, or is it just another day on the calendar?  If you were in a coma for a while and woke up today not knowing day or time, there is absolutely nothing in the sky that will tell you it’s a new year, considering that it looks and feels like any other day (apart from the amount of food spread out for the celebration). So why the fuss, or is there really a good reason why we go through all the hullabaloo of the season? What indeed about the New Year? Here's what i think...

It is the ultimate time marker: New Year is to time what birthdays are to people. Have you noticed that you don’t grow up or grow old on your birthday? You don’t stay the same through the year then wake up on your birthday and grow grey hairs and wrinkled features. Growth and aging happens every day, but we mark it on one particular day. Likewise, time passes every day, but we mark the passage of time once every year. It helps us realise that although everyday tends to look and feel the same, time is passing.

Its serves as the referee’s timeout bell: Just like the ref’s bell signals the end of a boxing round or the halftime whistle of a game, the new year gives a sense of breather to life; a “catch your breath” kind of thing. It’s a time to sit in the corner and let the coach massage your shoulder as you get ready for another one year bout. You get to splash water on your face; let the tension off your muscles for a few minutes. This makes the New Year very important, because when it comes to the long haul, having a moment to catch your breath is the difference between success and failure.

It’s an opportunity to delete, redo, undo or cut and paste: the New Year presents us the opportunity to assess and reassess our values, goals and commitments for the previous year/s. To also consider the path our lives are headed, if we are indeed going in the right direction, or if we should clear our chart list and enter a different course.

Now that we have come to the precipice of another new year, you need to understand the opportunity that life has set before you. Whether or not you did well last year is slightly irrelevant. What is important is you’ve been running for a while, that means you have spent some considerable amount of energy, and you have another long lap ahead of you, so you need to catch your breath as fast as you can, and take off.  Early risers are already on their way, but It’s very important to note that as good as it is to rise early and take off quick, it’s also very important to make sure you are prepared and running in the right direction.  Perhaps my post on Setting Goals for The New Year might help you plan and be prepared for the year.

Let me officially welcome you to a great year. Let’s do what we do best and make a huge success out of it!

  1. Thank u so much fot this Kani. The fuss always takes me back to the blue print. It sometimes saddens me though when i achieve so little the previous year. Nevertheless, it's a time to decide the way forward.
