Its movement was swift,
Quick and fluid,
For though I was fast,
As fast as my legs could carry,
It easily covered the distance,
That I tried to put between us.

It was dark,
Black as the abyss of hell,
It was large,
As big as my mind could imagine,
Definitely it is strong enough to crush me,
As it now hovered over me.

With heart beating like a mad man's drums,
And sweat pouring like the drench of rain,
I saw my life flash before my eyes,
My end approach like an uninvited guest,
So with my dying breath, I let out a scream,
Then I heard a 'click' sound

I lay motionless for an eternity, certain I was dead,
But when nothing else happened, I dared to open my eyes,
And alas I was safe,
For at my scream someone had switched on the light,
And like every shadow must at the presence of light,
The shadow that tormented me disappeared at the click of a light bulb.
