Who's got The Yardstick?

It was a normal day in the office, and I can’t even remember how the conversation was initiated. It had to do with a popular religious figure in my neck of the woods who came into possession a pretty little private jet.  The official press release said it was a gift from some parishioners in his church celebrating the preacher's forty years anniversary as a minister. Other more clandestine sources claim it was purchased from the coffers of the church, while a minority group claimed it was a gift from the nation’s president who happens to be from the same geographic location with the said preacher and had received prayers from the minister (very expensive prayers if you ask me).  Point is, all hell broke loose
as soon as the announcement was made concerning the private jet. Flags in all shades of red were raised, a few with the cross and bone insignia, all discrediting the authenticity of the preacher's calling. The critics marched to the media houses to lay their formal complaints and displeasure with what they termed a flagrant display of ungodliness by the man of God, and they genuinely believed that is was their

citizens obligation to complain. They raised issues of world hunger, motherless babies and even ethnic cleansing (the connection was lost on me), and how someone of his calling can spend that amount of money on such luxury while the world died of starvation.

Now my friend (God bless her ignorant soul) was ferociously and verbally opinionated about the matter. If you had seen her, you’d think the man used her college savings to fund the purchase (veins throbbing and arms flailing). I am passionate about fairness and justice, so I decided to investigate the matter and I raised some questions. I’ll be happy if you too can follow my thoughts and add your comments.

My first question was, which is the point of concern?  That the world is dying of hunger or that the plane is too expensive for him because he is a preacher?  I ask because every other day, someone is buying a plane or a yacht, or a small city( first time appointed government official, business tycoon, music and movie artists, corporations, politicians…) and no one is telling them about world hunger day . Secondly, if a business tycoon, running a successful company for over forty years decides to buy a jet, would anyone feel funny about it? Realizing I was scoring a point, I drove deeper and closer home, so I asked her “If your dad after slaving for forty years gets the gift of a jet, and folk decide he should sell it and feed the poor, would you be OK with that? Especially, if that has been a major part of his work for the forty years in question”.

Now, I don’t know if the tenets of his faith allows him to own such opulence, and I never bothered to find out, my interest is more on the standard of judgment we use for others in relation to the ones we would use on ourselves. Also should we use a different standard of judgment for other people because of their profession or office? Are all men not equally responsible under common rule of law?

  1. the man is no business tycoon. he's a preacher. he should have lived by example and donated to the poor. does he not have widows in his church? is there no poor man amongst his congregation?

  2. i don't think it matters that the man is a preacher. even if he has widows and poor people in his congregation does it mean that he should be poor too? even Jesus knew that it wasn't possible to completely eradicate the poor. he said they'd always be amongst us. u people should lighten up on this pastors abeg

  3. @Anonymous, i completely agree with you. Nobody said he should be poor but come on a jet? that's preposterous jor. and to your question if my father who has remained poor for forty years gets a jet, if I'd ask him to sell it? oh yes, i will! we've been poor for forty years for crying out loud. what's he doing with a jet? he should sell it and start up a business or share the money to his children to get a life. that's the only way to eradicate the poverty. not buy flying a jet around. where's a trying to sef?

  4. Lol @ Segun, my sentiments exactly. they said it was his congregation that contributed the money. if you check well, those people have their parents in the village or a brother who's suffering with me at Ajegunle here while their families are busy contributing money to buy a jet for a pastor. no be car o! Jet!

  5. Honestly, pastor Kani. when do born-again Christians starting comparing themselves with the people of the world. Being a pastor means a lot. Means being representative of Christ Jesus. As we all know Christ did not have anything of His own, even the apostles did not equally have expensive things of their own. The ones the individuals have they sale it and bring the money for collective usage. Crying out loud, what is a pastor doing with a jet. If it is a kind of expensive car that could be preferable though not advisable as well. Couldn't he have sold the jet even it is a gift. Let us all look unto Jesus the author and finisher of faith. Pastors live by example.

    1. Pastors live by example? Abi Christians live by example? We haven't answered the salient questions the blogger has raised here? What are the real reasons why everyone is screaming BLUE MURDER? Is a private Jet a means of transportation or just a form of in-your-face display of opulence? Wetin be our problem sef?

  6. Judge not so that you will not be judged. God sees the heart, whatever the man of God is using the jet for only God knows. If we were in his shoes what would we do?its easy for us to say things that we would do than for us to actually do it.

  7. Lolz... People will always talk ... So pastors should be an example of poor people ? Chai ... The devil is a liar.. Jesus became poor ( but wears a designer and employed a treasurer) that we will become Rich...( Wear crested designers and even own banks)....wait self... The people dat are talking do they live in houses ? Why didn't they sell it and give it to the poor ? And go live under the rain ? Mehn... They didn't see the man wen he opened a macro finance bank that empowers his members with start up capitals without colatarals , wen he bought bikes, keke, TV sets, general, taxi, industral ovens for members ... No a man reaps the FRUIT of a 40yrs investment in people (wich is risky). Jesus sent the disciples to take a coin out of the mouth of the fish, the MOG just stayed in his calling... By the way, He needs the jet for the kind of responsibility ( CAN president) that he is handling. Somebody say amen and pay me an offering... Lolzz

    1. u r funny..but u have a point.if they gave it to him ,they feel he needs it.he took it because he feels he needs it.God allowed it because a jet is no big deal..what is a jet..a means of transportation?over priced because the world is wicked ..what is money?a piece of paper or a piece of metal....

  13. I see it differently, its not a matter of having jet or not having one.its simply setting priorities right, putting the first things first.Where he is right now in the ministry might require that he use the jet, to make ministry easy for him...(who says he should pass through that much stress in order to get the good news across to people)common! God has made it possible by providing.Nevertheless,im sure such preacher understands as well the core evidence of the message he carries..."lovee".As the need to help the poor, widows and the likes as mentioned arises,he will surely take care of the needs.

  15. it is absolutely sad that everyone missed the morale of the article. you're spending so much words judging/criticizing the man of God, whereas you haven't even self-examined yourselves. that's why we'd all be surprised on the last day when God will ignore us when we say 'it was the devil', because we've spent so much time of our lives pointing at others and ignoring our own short-comings. take out the yardstick and measure your life first. it's so sad that you guys belittled such an awesome article to a 'call for gossip and slandering'. really. if i were the blogger, i sincerely would be offended.

  16. why are they judging the man ?the people that gave him the gift wanted to give him the gift..he is poor..they wanted to help him..so they want to help the poor and started with him..if he was rich he would have bought the plane and no one would talk...they are talking because they are envious..forgetting that God promised to bless those who stick out their necks for him with houses ,and other things...God said if someone sacrifices for Him ,He would return those things in 100 fold...If he was not serving God maybe he would be a drug baron and be able to afford many jets,if he was not serving God maybe he would be a business tycoon...but kanayo people do judge other people like artists, politicians and so on when the spend huge sums of money...but they feel that pastors and men and women of God should have higher standards and expect them not to join such people in vanity and heavy spending .

  17. some people will do anything for money...they sell their children and lose their own soul for money..it appalls people when they see those they expect to know better dong the same thing and worshipping money too..they forget that some of these servants of God sometimes are actually serving some other person or thing and not God.
